Turmeric is a plant, which is being researched a lot, due to the benefits it provides. It has great usage in medicine and its part called curcumin has been a subject of thousands of biomedical studies. Turmeric is an ingredient that is used in many ingredients and dishes in the world.
With recent five-year-long research, it was determined that turmeric has nearly six hundred potential therapeutic and preventive usages. It also has many beneficial psychological advantages in the healing process.
Turmeric as well as Many Other Drugs
Many conducted studies have revealed that turmeric usage has proved to be better in comparison to the more conventional medicines, such as:
1. Aspirin (blood thinner)
A study that was conducted back in 1986 for a medical journal found that turmeric`s main ingredient – curcumin has an antiplatelet and showed prostacyclin modulating effects in comparison to aspirin, which points to that turmeric is beneficial in patients that have arthritis or vascular thrombosis problems.
2. Corticosteroids (steroid medications)
The Epoch Time published in 1999 showed that turmeric`s primary polyphenol pigment – curcumin, showed lots of positive effects in the healing process of inflammatory eye diseases in comparison to steroids. In 2003 Cancer Letters published a study that showed that curcumin is more beneficial than dexamethasone for healing the lung reperfusion injury. Critical Care Medicine also published The Epoch Time in 2008, which showed that curcumin has proved to be better than the corticosteroid drug called dexamethasone as a therapy for lung transplantation protection, as it downregulates the inflammatory genes.
3. Anti-Inflammatory drugs
The journal Oncogene published The Epoch Time in 2004, which proved that the ingredients curcumin and the resveratrol showed anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory activities while Natural News cells and are good and efficient alternatives to the drugs such as ibuprofen, naproxen, tamoxifen, celecoxib, dexamethasone, aspirin, phenylbutazone, sulindac, diclofenac, and indomethacin.
4. Oxaliplatin (Chemotherapy Drug)

5. Lipitor/Atorvastatin (Cholesterol Medication)
Research in 2008 found that Turmeric’s standardized preparation of curcuminoids showed better results than the Lipitor drug in type 2 diabetic patients. It is beneficial against endothelial dysfunction, pathology of blood vessels that drives atherosclerosis.
6. Metformin (Diabetes Drug)
Biochemistry and Biophysical Research Community published research in 2009, which explored the ways in which curcumin is valuable in the battle against diabetes. The study found that curcumin suppresses the expression of the gluconeogenic genes (which also suppresses glucose production in the liver). Another interesting finding is that curcumin is five hundred to a hundred thousand times more powerful than metformin in activating ACC and AMPK.
7. Prozac/Fluoxetine/Imipramine (antidepressants)
Research published by a medical journal in 2011 showed that curcumin helps in reducing depression and depressive behavior in comparison to these antidepressants.
Besides these mentioned positive effects, turmeric and its components are exhibiting some other therapeutic and beneficial properties. There are many kinds of research in natural and integrative therapies where curcumin is on top of the list. It has great efficiency in the battle against radiation-resistant and chemotherapy-resistant cancers also.
Because of the so many positive effects, it has, usage of curcumin is highly recommended, both as food or medicine and as an alternative to drugs in the treatment of cancers.
