For many years eating red meat has always been associated with different kinds of health conditions including cancer but without any conclusive evidence. However, the speculation is no more. According to research by the University of California, eating red meat actually causes cancer.
The Cancer Causing Compound
From the study, it was found that mammals except man have a type of sugar known as Neu5Gc. The presence of this sugar explains why true carnivores can eat meat and not have any side effects. Since it is absent in man, eating red meat triggers the immune response.
Remember, the sugar is perceived as an unknown object hence triggering of the immune systems. When this happens, inflammations occur, and continued intake of red meat then results into cancer.
Studies carried out in mice mimicked the exact situation in humans and with the mice used for experiments having increased cases of cancer. The Neu5Gc sugar is found in all red meat including pork and beef and products such as cow’s milk and a few types of cheeses.
Based on the study, it is clear that eating red meat frequently increases your chances of cancer. Therefore, you need to watch your intake if you want to avoid this deadly condition and stay healthy.
