What is Type 2 Diabetes?
This is the most common type of diabetes and it is also known as noninsulin dependent diabetes. The statistics show that Type 2 diabetes affects 90 to 95% of the people who have diabetes. While type 1 diabetes needs insulin, type 2 produces it, but, the insulin produced in the pancreas is either not sufficient or the body is not able to recognize and use it.
This condition is also known as insulin resistance. When this happens, the glucose or sugar is not able to get into the cells. If the glucose layers in the blood and not in the cells, these cells cannot function.
Problems Caused by Increase of Glucose in the Blood
- Dehydration: When the sugar builds up in the blood it can increase urination in order to clean the sugar out of the body. The kidneys will lose the glucose through urine and a large amount of water is a great loss for the body, causing dehydration.
- Hyperosmolar nonketotic diabetic coma: If the person suffering from type 2 diabetes is very dehydrated and cannot drink too many liquids to bring back the lost fluids, he/she might develop this condition which is dangerous for his/her health.
After a period of time, the glucose high consistency in the blood can harm the kidneys, heart small blood vessels, and nerves, and all this can lead to atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries causing stroke or heart attack.
Who can get Type 2 Diabetes?
People with more high risk are the ones who have too much fat and are overweight, women with gestational diabetes, people who have relatives already suffering from diabetes, or the ones with metabolic syndrome (group of issues like high triglycerides, high cholesterol, high bad ‘LDL’ cholesterol, low good ‘LDL’ cholesterol and high blood pressure). Older people are also more likely to develop this type of diabetes because aging can make the body intolerant to sugar.
Causes of Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is more common than type 1, and it can appear as a result of many factors, and not just because of one problem. It can be within family members, but the real cause of the inherited factor, or one genetic factor is still not known to researchers.
Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes symptoms are different for every person. Here are some of them:
- Dry mouth;
- Increased hunger after eating;
- Frequent urination;
- Numbness/tingling of the hands or feet;
- Increased thirst;
- Fatigue;
- Blurred vision;
- Occasionally vomiting and nausea;
- Frequent infections of the urinary tract, skin, and female genital tract.
Herbal Supplements Great for Diabetes
Bitter Gourd
The most important home remedy for diabetes is the bitter gourd. A recent discovery showed that bitter gourd has hypoglycemic in its consistency, or in other words, an insulin-like principle called plant insulin, which is very valuable for lowering urine and blood sugar levels. Diabetics should include it in their diet immediately.
People suffering from diabetes can make a juice of four to five bitter gourds and drink it on an empty stomach every morning. You can use the seeds as well but in powdered form. It can be also used in the form of a dry powder or decoction (boiling the pieces in water).
Indian Gooseberry
Because of the high amount of vitamin C, the Indian gooseberry is considered to be very powerful. Mix one tbsp. of Indian gooseberry juice and a cup of bitter gourd juice and take it for 2 months, every day. This will stimulate the isolated group of cells in the pancreas which secrete the hormone insulin, also called Langerhans. This mixture can reduce the blood sugar in diabetes.
Jambul Fruit
This fruit is regarded as valuable for treating diabetes and it is quite special in traditional medicine because of the effect it has on the pancreas. You can use whole fruit together with the seeds and their juice since they are very useful.
The seeds have glucoside jamboline, regarded as capable of making sure the pathological conversion of starch into sugar is normal, and checking if the production of glucose is increased. The seed of the jambul fruit can be dried and powdered. Combine one teaspoon of jambul seeds powder and a cup of milk, and take it two times a day.
Another part of the fruit which can help cure this disease is the inner bark of the tree. Usually, the bark of the jambul tree is dried and burnt so that it can produce white ash. You can strain, bottle, or pest lead in mortar this ash and take it when needed.
The dose is 10 grams of the ash with some water on an empty stomach in the morning, but the dose is increased to 20 grams in the afternoon and in the evening after an hour of the meal. A mixture of an equal amount of jamun powder, amla powder, and some bitter gourd powder can be great for diabetics as well. Take one teaspoon of the mixture one or two times a day.
Grapefruit
This is an amazing food when it comes to a diabetic patient. Grapefruit should be more often consumed so fewer people have problems with this disease. Eat three grapefruits three times a day, but only if you have sugar. Otherwise, as a prevention, you should take three a day.
Fenugreek
Another effective product for treating diabetes is fenugreek seeds. These seeds, if taken in different doses of 25g to 100g in a day, lower the reactive hyperglycemia. Diabetes patients should consume them regularly since they can considerably decrease serum cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose levels.
Bengal Gram
Many studies show that consuming water extract of Bengal gram can increase the usage of glucose in normal and diabetes-affected persons. If it is used as part of the diet, in the form of supplements, Bengal gram extract improves the condition of a patient and reduces the insulin requirement to 20 units a day.
Patients who are on a special diet without restricting carbohydrates, and allowing a liberal amount of this extract, have shown that their blood sugar, urinary excretion of sugar, glucose tolerance, and whole health condition improved very fast.
Black Gram
If the type of diabetes is mild, then use two tablespoons of sprout black gram, half a cup of bitter gourd juice, and a teaspoon of honey, since it is very useful. The recommended dose is once a day for three or four months. Avoid consuming carbohydrates at any cost. Even in worrying cases, using this recipe and many precautions will heal your body. It can be very helpful for many issues caused by not having a proper diet.
Mango Leaves
The soft and delicate leaves of the mango tree are regarded as very helpful for diabetics. You can prepare an infusion by soaking 15g of fresh mango leaves in 250 ml water and leaving it overnight. In the morning make sure you squeeze them well. Take this filtrate every morning so that you have control over your diabetes. Alternatively, use leaves dried in the shade, powdered, and preserved just for a half teaspoon two times daily.
Purslane
It can be quite useful if you consume a teaspoon of purslane seeds together with half a cup of water for three or four months. The benefit of taking these seeds is increasing the level of insulin and curing diabetes.
Other Foods
Other vegetables can be great for a diabetic condition. These are:
-
- Cucumber;
- String beans;
- Garlic;
- Onion;
- Tea made of pods of string beans.
