A few days ago, the management of one of the biggest snack, food and beverage corporations in the world Pepsi Corporation has confirmed that their popular Aquafina bottled water is not spring water or purified water. Their product represents plain tap water. After this, PepsiCo will need to alter the labeling of this product, so that the consumers will know that they are using plain tap water.
The thing is that most of the customers are using bottled water because they are worried about the effects of drinking tap water. They know that tap water usually contains fluoride and even some chemicals. Unfortunately, it seems that in many cases, even bottled water is more or less the same as tap water.
In the last decade, Corporate Accountability International, a very active advocacy group, has been regularly examining the ingredients found in bottled water and forcing companies to avoid using false claims in their commercials.
What is shocking is that PepsiCo’s Aquafina is one of the most popular brands of bottled water in the world and after these new moments it is expected that its popularity will drop.
According to Michelle Naughton, a Pepsi Corporation representative, Pepsi Corporation is ready to emphasize the fact that the water is produced from public sources in case this clarification makes a difference. The aforementioned advocacy group is now focused on Dasani bottled water produced by Coca-Cola. But, in this case, Coca-Cola claims that their product is more than tap water. According to Diana Garza Ciarlante, a spokeswoman for Coca-Cola Company, Dasani water is adequately labeled and the label explains that Dasani is purified water.
It is also good to mention that one of the largest water suppliers in North America, Niagara Bottling has informed the public that they have noticed the presence of E. Coli in one of their biggest springs which made many popular companies that produce bottled water to stop their production. The fact is that bottled water can be useful, but we must be careful all the time.
