Not only that the rank smell of rotten vegetables in your fridge means you have cleaning to do, but it also means you have lost a good amount of money. Buying a lot of items is pointless if you eventually have to throw them away, right?
To prevent this from happening and keep your fruits and veggies as fresh as possible, follow the next few kitchen tips.
Cucumbers
How to keep cucumbers crisp, and prevent them become soggy? It’s very simple. Just cut them in about ¼ inch slices and store them in a sealable container of any kind. Place a folded paper towel on top of the slices and close the container. Keep the cucumber slices upside down, with the paper towel on the bottom. In this way, the paper towel will absorb extra moisture, keeping your cucumbers fresh and preventing them become too soggy.
Peppers
Sometimes, you might feel peppers have lost their flavor right after you have cut them, but, there’s a way to prevent this. Cut them in slices with sharp knife, and remove their seeds and stem.
Wrap the peppers with a paper towel, and place them like that in an airtight container. Pour half an inch of cold water in the container, seal, and store in the fridge.
This will keep the freshness of your peppers for a week.
Carrots
We have a solution to prevent your carrots dry. The green tops of the carrots suck out the moisture, leaving the carrot limp and dry.
Therefore, remove this green part of the carrots, and store them in a container filled with cold water. In this way, your carrots will remain fresh.
Lettuce
No one wants soggy, dead lettuce leaves, and why would they? Luckily, there’s a way to keep them fresh. Gently wrap the leaves with a paper towel, and put them in an airtight container. The paper towel will prevent your lettuce become soggy by soaking up the extra moisture. The airtight container will slow down the wilting process by preventing excess air from circulation. In this way, you will have fresh lettuce leaves for up to 10 days.
Berries
Although you may think washing your freshly-bought fruits before storing them in the fridge is a good idea, actually, it’s not. Don’t wash all of your berries to keep them ‘clean’ for days, but wash right before you eat them, and only the amount you think it’s enough for that moment. Otherwise, the wetness will cause mold growth, and your ‘clean’ berries will spoil much quicker.
