Dust mites are well-known insects for many homeowners. They can be found in carpets, bedding and different pieces of upholstered furniture. Dust mites live in areas where they have access to dead skin cells. Infestations like this are present in more than 80% of home in America and they can lead to many different health problems related to asthma and allergies as well as certain skin reactions. The signs that you have a presence of dust mite infestation in your home include runny nose, sneezing, itchy, red or watery eyes, cough, itchy throat, nose or roof of the mouth, facial pain or pressure/tension and blue skin under your eyes.Individuals suffering from asthma will also notice breathing problems, chest pain, insomnia, wheezing and proneness to colds and flu.
Washing the sheets on a regular basis and vacuuming your home is always a good idea if you want to protect yourself from dust mites.
However, there are some items where dust mites like to dwell like mattresses and throw pillows that are difficult to clean. In addition, in case your vacuum cleaner doesn’t come with a HEPA filter, the dust mites will be back.
One of the best ways to eliminate dust mites and keep them away from your home is to use eucalyptus oil mixture poured in a spray bottle.
Eucalyptus Dust Mite Elimination Recipe

- 30 drops of eucalyptus oil
- Two cups of distilled water.

Scientific studies have confirmed that eucalyptus oil and other similar oils can kill dust mites, but science still doesn’t have an answer why these oils are efficient and how they work. What is known for sure is that the use of eucalyptus oil doesn’t lead to any side effects.
Sadly, this oil is not very safe for kids under 10. But, as we already said you can use other oils that are effective against dust mites and perfectly safe for children. Some of these oils include fennel and clove essential oils.
