There’s one burglary every 15 seconds in America, so not surprisingly America is the world-leading country when it comes to break-ins and burglaries.
Even 30 percent of burglars have reported entering homes without using force, but through open windows, unlocked doors, and other unprotected openings.
However, even if you do remember to lock your door all the time, and to close your windows, there’s still a possibility of a break-in.
Burglars can go to great lengths to achieve their goal, and one woman shares her story to emphasize the importance of protection from the cunning tactics of burglars.
The Story of Kim
Kim Cernigliaro is a woman from Texas, who had a close encounter with burglars who wanted to break-in her house. One day she heard pounding on her front door, while she was alone. Her gut told her something wasn’t right, so luckily she didn’t open the door. She noticed an unknown man’s silhouette when she peered through the stained glass on the door.
After she has convinced herself that the unknown man was gone, she opened the door and found a rubber band wrapped around the doorknob. As the local sheriff explains, this practice is becoming more and more popular among burglars. They put a rubber band around the knob which allows them to enter in homes the moment a person unlatches the door. So they don’t have to wait for someone turning the doorknob.
Kim posted her story on Facebook to raise awareness of this burglar trick, and her viral post was shared more than 150,000 times, for which many people had thanked her. To protect you and your family, you must know the various methods that burglars are using.
We present you with several basic safety advice to make your home less tempting for burglars.
1. Don’t Permit Packages to Accumulate
You might give valuable information to possible burglars if you leave discarded items and mail outside your house. If you go on a holiday, and there’s no one in your house, ask a friend or a neighbor to take your mail so that burglars don’t discover that the home is empty.
2. Put Home Security Signs
Home security system might be expensive, but they provide full protection of your home. But, if you can’t allow one, put home security signs in your yard to convince possible burglars that your home is well protected.
3. Make Your Home Well-Lit
An ideal target for burglars is a dark home, as no one will be able to notice them in there trying to break in or leaving with your belongings. You should deter potential criminals by placing well-lit yard and porch lights.
4. Hide Your Valuables
Burglars will notice your jewelry box right away. So to protect your valuables, keep them in less obvious places which can’t be noticed through your window.
5. Burglar-Proof Your Doors
If your door is not well protected, burglars will get into your home much easier. Burglar-proof your door by placing more security locks to keep them away.
