Have you ever wondered why your grandfather or grandmother didn’t have to deal with food allergies? Do you remember that only a small number of children had this problem when you were a child?
It seems that food allergies are getting quite common these days. They are not only frustrating because people have to think twice before they choose the food that they consume, but they are also affecting our overall health and cost as a lot of money.
According to Food Allergy magazine, an allergic reaction to certain type of food forces someone to visit the emergency room every three minutes. In other words more than 200.000 emergency interventions in a year are dedicated to food allergies.
A scientific study published two years ago and conducted by the CDCP, food allergies that appear in children have increased for more than a half in the last 15 years. It seems that everything begins with our babies.
According to Dr. Mercola, allergies related to milk are the most common food allergies in the United States. Dr. Mercola relates this allergy to the increased use of growth hormones found in milk and the increased use of antibiotics in farming which started in the early 90s.
So, The Question is – Does Our Food Contain Some Ingredients that Could Not be Found in The Past?
The answer is YES! Processed foods that we consume can lead to different allergies and there is more than one reason for that. The vast majority of processed foods are packed with artificial flavors, food colorings, preservatives and different kinds of additives and all these things can result in many difficulties and problems.
However, it is good to point out that there is another thing found in modern food that makes food even more dangerous.
In the middle of the 90s, scientists have developed a new type of food proteins and they were instantly included in processed food. However, most people today are unaware of this fact. This move was made in order to increase profit and there is nothing unusual about that.
What is unusual is the fact that this new ingredient was included without human trials and tests in order to check whether these genetically modified proteins are safe for use.
The first product that included these proteins was milk and miraculously this is also the type of food that is labeled as the most common food allergen.
22 years ago, the American dairy industry included a modified growth hormone or rBGH in the diet of cows breed for milk production. The basic goal was to increase production of milk. The final result was disappointing – the milk production did increase, but there were many cows that became ill.
In order to prevent the occurrence of diseases, the dairy industry included antibiotics in the cows’ diet. This practice led to the occurrence of super-bugs in men and women that are resistant to antibiotic.
What Exactly Made Our Grandparents Resistant to Food Allergies?
The answer is very simple – they didn’t consume food packed with preservatives and their diet consisted of unprocessed foods. All of the food they’ve used was bought from markets and farms. Babies started developing with completely natural breast milk.
Back in those days, only a small number of people have heard about the term dieting. On the other hand, obesity and overweight are very common today and we all know about the negative effects of additives, chemicals, preservatives, stabilizers, food flavoring, food coloring and GMO found in modern food (and still eat it).
In the past, the meat came from animals that have never tasted antibiotics. People have consumed home prepared meals from natural ingredients.
In addition, people didn’t have computers, cell phones and other gadgets that kept them busy all the time. Children were playing games outside in the nature.
Furthermore, they didn’t use drugs or visited hospitals when the smallest sign of disease occurred. If they had fiver, they’ve rested and eaten more fruits and veggies. People relied on their immune system and the body’s ability to heal itself.
There is no doubt that lifestyle and eating habits directly affect our body and overall health. The cells found in the body require adequate nutrients so they can work in the right way. On the other hand, improper lifestyle and eating habits will ruin the functioning of every cell and we will soon start experiencing problems with specific types of food.
It seems that food allergies are actually a secondary product of all the environmental elements we have mentioned before and these problems were uncommon a few decades ago. Judging by the look of our food today, the future is not very bright either.
