Seafood has numerous health benefits, it is rich in vitamins, proteins, and minerals. Although it is very healthy to include fish on your daily menu, experts warn people to be careful when choosing the type of fish, especially when it comes to tilapia.

Tilapia is one of the most popular farmed and affordable fish in the USA. It does not provide the expected nutritive properties but it is bad for your health. Why is that so? Is it worse even than bacon?

These are the reasons why tilapia is an awful fish:

#1 Contains Very Few Nutritive Properties

According to scientists from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, tilapia possesses a low level of omega-3 fatty acids than all the other fish on the list. What makes omega-3 fatty acids important for you is that they prevent many illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease, heart issues, and many others.

However, tilapia contains omega-6 fatty acids, acids that are terrible for your health. One serving of tilapia has a higher inflammatory potential than some fast food.

#2 Could Cause Alzheimer’s Disease

Arachidonic acid is one of the omega-6 fatty acids, found in tilapia which increases the inflammatory process that precedes the occurrence of Alzheimer’s disease.

Sardines, mackerel, and halibut reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease in relation to tilapia only increasing the potential.

#3 The Majority of Tilapia is Farmed

Most tilapia is not grown in natural conditions but on farms. This is a result of its hardiness and ability to eat anything.

So, farmers do not need to spend lots of money on fish food as they need for growing salmon. Instead of that, they feed the fish with pig and chicken poop. Terrible, isn’t it?

However, these are not the only nasty things that happen on the farms but the fish ponds are usually overcrowded, full of antibiotics, and genetically modified in order to grow faster.

#4 Can Cause Cancer

Being exposed to such conditions, tilapia can carry up to 10 times the amount of carcinogenic properties than any other fish. This is nothing weird since you know the way they are fed with pesticides, poop, or industrial chemicals. Scientists found dioxin in tilapia, a toxic substance connected to the development of cancer.

Unfortunately, the dioxin resides in your body from 7 to 11 years, a really long period of damage to your body.
