In 2008, Clairol has conducted a survey that showed that 75% of women in the U.S. dye their hair. The same survey discovered that for 88% of women, their hair affects their confidence.

Women who often dye their hair, whether in a salon or at home, shouldn’t ignore the dangers of the chemical products they use.

Hair dyes contain around 5,000 different chemicals, many of them proven to be carcinogenic in animal research.

Color Your Hair Without Using Chemicals

1. Chamomile for Golden Blonde Hair

  • 300ml of water
  • 8 tablespoons of dried chamomile flowers
  • Juice half a lemon

Pour the hot water over the chamomile flowers, and heat for around 15 minutes. After cooling, strain the mixture and add the lemon juice.

Spread the mixture on your entire hair, comb, and let it dry. If you dry your hair outside in the sun, you will get even better results. After that, shampoo your hair as normal.

2. Walnut Hulls for Dark Brown Color

Boil walnut hulls for at least half an hour. Allow the mixture to cool, and then soak your hair in it for about 20 minutes, depending on the desired shade. Don’t rub the dye into the scalp too much.

3. Onion Peels for Gray Hair

In a glass of boiling water, soak ½ a glass of onion peels for about 20 minutes. Cover the glass to prevent the heat from getting out. Use gauze to strain the mixture, and then add two tablespoons of glycerol to the strained liquid. Apply this natural dye to your hair on a daily basis, until you get the desired shade. Once you rub your hair with the dye well, wash as normal and allow it to dry naturally.

4. Coffee

Coffee will help you get a chocolate hair color without damage. You have only to prepare some strong organic coffee because the non-organic can contain various chemicals. When cooled, combine the brewed coffee with 2 tablespoons of coffee grounds and 2 cups of natural conditioner.

Also, there is another much easier form of this treatment. First, shampoo your hair and then pour it with some cooled coffee. After 20 minutes, wash it with apple cider vinegar and then only with water.

5. Herbs

Different herbs will help you achieve different hair colors, such as:

Red: Use rosehips, calendula, hibiscus, or marigold to color your hair red. Just simmer the ingredients in water for half an hour, strain them and let them cool. Apply the mixture to your hair, sun-dry if possible.

Brunette: For this hair color, use sage, rosemary, and nettle. Repeat the same method of preparation as with the previous herbs.

Blonde: Calendula, chamomile, saffron, marigold, sunflower petals, and saffron will provide a very good blonde color. Repeat the same method of preparation.

6. Henna

Henna powder naturally colors the hair into red-orange color, so it is best for brunettes and redheads. In order to soften the orange color, you can mix henna with chamomile.

Combine 1 cup of henna powder with 2 cups of lemon juice. Let it for 4-6 hours and then apply it throughout the hair. Before washing, cover the hair with a plastic wrap for 2-3 hours.

7. Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is the best solution for highlights. Just spray some lemon juice throughout your hair and leave it for several hours. You might need to repeat the process several times because it needs some time to work.

8. Beet or Carrot Juice for Red Hair

A great way to temporarily color your strands with reddish color is dyeing your hair using beet or carrot juice. In this way, your natural hair dye won’t contain any nasty chemicals.

  • Whipped coconut oil
  • Beet juice (with or without carrot juice)

Mix the beet juice and the coconut oil, and apply the solution to your hair. Use plastic wrap to cover your hair. Let it act for an hour, and then rinse and condition as usual. Check out the video below to see this hair dyeing process:
