In an interview, Dr. David Brownstein explains the relation of iodine deficiency with cancer. He explains that if we supply our body with the right nutrients, we should be fine throughout our whole life. So, Dr. Brownstein considers iodine as one of the basic nutrients. He explains that each cell in our body requires it in order to function normally. He says that people can’t function optimally if their body has an iodine deficiency. Together with his partner, he tested more than 6,000 patients, 96% of whom proved to have low amounts of iodine in their bodies.  Clinics throughout the country confirm these same statistics. Dr. Brownstein explains the function of iodine in our body. It’s crucial for proper work of the immune system, and even more for endocrine glands. His main function is to maintain the normal architecture of the tissues of ovaries, breasts, thyroid, prostate, and uterus. As you may notice, the number of cancer cases concerning these body organs is constantly increasing, and moreover, thyroid cancer is the fastest growing cancer in the U.S. He argues that the first thing that happens in case of iodine deficiency is the formation of cysts in the ovaries, thyroid, breasts, pancreas, and prostate. If the iodine deficiency goes on for a long period, the cysts will become hard and nodular, and if this period is even longer they turn to hyperplastic tissue- a precursor to cancer. Iodine is able to stop this continuous dividing and put a brake on the ongoing process, and hopefully reverse it. It turns out that iodine plays a major role in the so-called system of elimination in the body especially in triggering apoptosis or what many people know as pre-programmed cell death/destruction. This is a very important self-defense mechanism of our body focused on the destruction of cells that represent a threat to the overall health (like cancer cells for example). In addition, women who experience goiter due to lack of iodine (enlarged thyroid gland) have three times more chances of developing breast cancer. Numerous studies have confirmed that increased intake of iodine has significantly reduced the occurrence of this type of cancer. Its absence or reduction usually leads to the worsened immune system, worsened cognitive functions, lower vitality, and energy, poor functioning of the thyroid gland, hormonal and endocrinal misbalance, ovarian, prostate, and breast cancer. More than 80% of women, or one in 7 women, suffer from fibrocystic breast disease which is a precursor to breast cancer. Dr. David Brownstein clearly points out that it’s a result of iodine deficiency.
