The history of hyperuricemia involves a high level of uric acid in the body. This high level is a result of increased production of uric acid or decreased excretion of it. This condition can cause problems such as gouty arthritis, renal failure, and kidney stones. Some studies have found that high blood uric acid can lead to cardiovascular diseases and hypertension. Normal uric acid levels include:
  • Men: 3.4 – 7.0 mg/dL;
  • Women: 2.4 – 6.0 mg/dL.
These normal values vary from laboratory to laboratory. The high uric acid level can be caused by some factors such as high purine diet, renal insufficiency, excess alcohol consumption, underactive thyroid, obesity, acidosis, diabetes, genetics and many other health conditions. Some medications such as diuretics, chemotherapy agents, and certain cancers can also lead to high uric acid level. Fasting, exercising and crash dieting can temporarily increase the uric acid levels. When having a high uric acid level, you must consult your doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment of this condition. However, some natural remedies can help you control the uric acid levels.

10 Ways to Control High Uric Acid Level

1. Lemon Juice

You may think that lemon juice will increase the acid level, but its alkaline effect neutralizes it. Also, vitamin C significantly reduces the uric acid levels.
  • Combine the juice of one squeezed lemon and a glass of warm water. Drink this mixture every morning on an empty stomach for a few weeks;
  • Enrich your diet with more vitamin C supplements.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is rich in potent natural cleansing and detoxifying properties. It’s the malic acid in ACV that can break down and remove uric acid. Also, ACV restores the alkaline acid balance and provides antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits.
  • Combine one teaspoon of organic apple cider vinegar and a glass of water;
  • Drink this mixture 2 or 3 times a day.
Increase the amount of apple cider vinegar up to 2 tablespoons a day and continue with this mixture until you reduce the uric acid. Note: Make sure you do not take excessive amounts of apple cider vinegar because it can reduce the potassium levels in the body.

3. Baking Soda

Baking soda is of particular importance when it comes to lowering uric acid and reducing gout pain. It restores the alkaline balance in the body and makes the uric acid more soluble. In this way, it can be more easily eliminated from the body.
  • Combine ½ teaspoon of baking soda and a glass of water;
  • Drink up to 4 glasses of this mixture for two weeks.
Note: drink this mixture for no longer than two weeks. Make sure you avoid it if you have high blood pressure. Also, older people shouldn’t drink more than three glasses of this per day.

4. Cherries

Cherries contain powerful chemicals, called anthocyanins that reduce the uric acid and reduce stiffness and inflammation.
  • Eat ½ cup of cherries every day for several weeks or drink 1-2 cups of tart cherry juice for one month;
  • Enrich your diet with more berries, bell peppers, tomatoes and many other antioxidant and vitamin C-rich foods.

5. Water

Water is the most highly utilized and important liquid in the process of lowering the uric acid level. By drinking plenty of water, you will optimize the filtering of the uric acid. Also, water dilutes the uric acid and stimulates its excretion through the kidneys. Additionally, regular and adequate consumption of water lowers the risk of gout attacks. According to an internet-based study, people who drink 5-8 glasses of water per day, have 40% lower risk of a gout attack in comparison to those who drink one glass or even less.
  • You should drink at least 8-10 glasses of water every day;
  • Consume more water-rich fruits and vegetables.

6. Olive Oil

Many vegetable oils turn into rancid fats when processed or heated. These fats destroy the vitamin E in the body, a vital nutrient that controls the uric acid. So, always choose cold-pressed olive oil rather than a vegetable oil. Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fats that remain the same when heated. Also, it is high in antioxidants, vitamin E, and many anti-inflammatory properties.

7. Starchy Carbs and High-Fiber Foods

Dietary fiber plays a major role in the absorption and elimination of uric acid. So, include more fiber-rich foods such as apples, whole grains, oranges, pears and strawberries in your diet. Starchy carbs include whole grain pasta, rice, quinoa, tapioca, bananas, oats, and potatoes. Also, green papaya tea will prevent the accumulation of uric acid and treat many gout and uric acid related conditions. It’s the papain in green papaya that maintains the alkaline state and acts as a potent anti-inflammatory agent.

8. A Low-Purine Diet

Purines are colorless nitrogen compounds that break into uric acid. They are primarily found in the animal proteins. Avoid animal proteins such as organ meats, poultry, fish as well as yeast, legumes, mushrooms, beans and asparagus. You may be surprised, but beer is also high in purine.

9. Wheatgrass Juice

Wheatgrass maintains the alkalinity in the blood. It is loaded with chlorophyll, vitamin C and other phytochemicals that enable detoxification. It is also rich in amino acids and protein, more beneficial nutrients rather than those found in the animal protein.
  • Combine the juice of one lemon and two tablespoons of wheatgrass juice and drink this mixture until you reduce the uric acid level.

10. Dairy Products

Dairy products are connected with low concentrations of plasma urate and low risk of gout. For example, skim milk has orotic acid that reduces the reabsorption of uric acid and stimulates its excretion through the kidneys.
  • Drink 1-5 cups of skim milk every day;
  • Enrich your diet with low-fat yogurt and other dairy products.
Tofu can alter the plasma protein concentration and stimulate the uric acid elimination. In contrast, soy milk tends to increase the uric acid.

Additional Tips:

  • Reduce your alcohol intake because it can obstruct the excretion of uric acid.
  • Avoid glucose-fructose syrup and high-fructose syrup because it increases the uric acid levels.
  • Exercise regularly because fatty tissues can increase the production of uric acid.
  • Consume balanced diet, rich in complex carbs and low in protein. Avoid candies, cakes, and white bread.
  • Reduce the intake of foods loaded with fat because they interfere with the uric acid elimination.
