Modern people are well-aware of the positive effects of exercise on their health. However, there are only a small number of people that know that there is a direct link between exercise and vision (eye health). We will now present an explanation about this interesting connection and hopefully these facts will encourage you to exercise more.

How does this connection work?

A scientific research conducted by scientists from the Atlanta Veterans Administration Medical Center and Emory University has shown that exercise can help people protect their eyesight from the negative effects of the aging process. These experts have conducted several experiments on lab mice by separating these subjects into two different groups. Group A was encouraged to use an improvised small treadmill for 60 minutes a day while Group B was left without any physical activity. After 15 days, Group A, the mice that used the treadmills, were left in a space with bright light for four hours, while Group B was left in dim lit lighted space. Exposing test animals on such light has already been used for induced degeneration of the retina in lab mice.

What does this means?

Once the experiment was finished, the researchers have realized that inactive mice had failing eyesight. About ¾ of the neurons that are used for detecting light in the retina of these mice were destroyed. This scientific study confirms that regular exercise has the ability to lower the chances of developing macular degeneration. This condition leads to deterioration of the neurons located in the middle of the retina. Now scientists are assessing the possibilities to test these results in humans. Of course, the possibility that there is a direct link between exercise and eyesight should provide sufficient motivation to remain physically active or to start exercising as soon as possible.
