The Journal of the American Medical Association has recently published a shocking study, revealing that Tylenol and similar drugs can cause liver damage, leading to liver failure and associated complications. The study was conducted on Healthy Adults, who were asked to consume the Maximum Dosage of the pill for Two Weeks.
Tylenol contains a substance known as acetaminophen, which is instrumental in granting pain relief. But now the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released a warning that this component is extremely harmful to the liver and can cause some very serious health issues.
The majority of Tylenol users are largely unaware of the side effects and complications it brings and continue consumption to gain quick relief from pain. Even when consumed at recommended doses, the acetaminophen content in the pill can result in liver failure and death.
This drug’s toxic metabolites have a tendency to destroy liver cells and researchers attribute most cases of sudden liver failure to the consumption of this drug.
Tylenol has been a household name in America for decades now with Millions of Americans consuming the pill regularly. But the statistics backing the study paint a very dark picture. Acetaminophen poisoning results in over 80,000 emergency hospitalizations due to liver damages and the drug is accountable for 500 more fatalities due to its toxic nature.
This study, conducted by Dr. Kenneth Simpson of the University of Edinburgh (Scotland) revealed that more than a Large Overdose, the drug is more likely to cause fatalities because of a staggered overdose of Tylenol, i.e. small overdoses over a period of time.
McNeil Healthcare, the Pharma company that makes & distributes Tylenol, which has been branded and marketed as a safe painkiller, has been facing immense pressure resulting from the staggering 85 personal injury lawsuit that has been filed on Tylenol.
Now McNeil plan to introduce a new label which would reads “CONTAINS ACETAMINOPHEN” and also the phrase “ALWAYS READ THE LABEL” in the Extra Strength Tylenol, which contains an alarming 50% additional acetaminophen content in each dose than the Regular Strength Version.
This move would also be replicated for the Regular Strength Tylenol in the months to come.
Mathew Perrone of the Associated Press writes that this new label would now bring to the attention of the users that Tylenol does indeed contain acetaminophen, which is one of the leading causes of sudden liver failure in the country, and that this label would help people who do not otherwise read warnings that are stated as the fine print of the older labels.
The FDA’s advisory panel is also looking to impose a complete ban on acetaminophen on all cough and cold relief drugs, because of the deadly side effects. And they have also put in a strong recommendation to remove Vicodin and Percocet completely from the market since they both contain high doses of acetaminophen.
