CONSUMER LAW GROUP has filed a class-action lawsuit against Unilever Canada, Unilever United States, and Alberto-Culver International on behalf of all Canadians who bought and/or used TRESemmé Keratin Shampoo Product (s).

It is claimed that the defendants made false and misleading statements and failed to provide adequate warning about the serious risks and negative side effects associated with the use of their TRESemmé Keratin Shampoo Products, including, but not limited to, significant hair loss, hair breakage, brittle, limp and/or lifeless hair, dermatitis, eczema, blistering, rash, scabbing, peeling, swelling, sore, tender, dry, burning, red, itchy

According to the class action, TRESemmé Keratin Shampoo Products contain DMDM hydantoin, a preservative that releases low levels of formaldehyde to extend the product’s shelf-life. When exposed to water, this preservative, known as a “formaldehyde donor,” emits more formaldehyde.

Longer storage times and higher temperatures can also exacerbate the release levels. Preservatives are necessary for the safe distribution of cosmetic products, but there are many alternatives to DMDM hydantoin. These alternatives are significantly safer, have fewer side effects, and do not emit formaldehyde.
