Grated Parmesan cheese is a favorite topping on the spaghetti and a variety of other dishes, but a Bloomberg Business report recently revealed a surprising fact, some brands of grated Parmesan cheese contain cellulose in amounts higher than allowed.

In other words, some grated cheese brands have an almost similar content to the timber powder!

Some Parmesan cheese brands sold in Walmart and Whole Foods containing cellulose in amounts that are too high, 7.8 percent to 8.8 percent. Cellulose is an anti-caking additive made of wood. Cellulose acceptable level is 2 to 4 percent.

Parmesan cheese products by Kraft have cellulose content of 3.8 percent so they are in a safe range. Whole Foods claims that they do not include cellulose as a building block of their Parmesan cheese, but the tests by Bloomberg found that their products contain cellulose by 0.3 percent.

Whole Foods denied the finding; however, the investigation is being conducted by the FDA. Another company that is now being investigated is the Castle Cheese Inc. It seems we all have to be more careful since now.
