Pregnancy is an interesting time for mothers-to-be and also for their families while they are getting ready to bring a new life into this world. Anyway, pregnancy can bring complications that may cause the mother to feel uncomfortable. Back pain is the most common complaint during pregnancy.

Reasons for Back Pain During Pregnancy

Many reasons cause back pain in women during pregnancy. One of the reasons is weight gain. Women, during pregnancy, are gaining weight dramatically.

It is difficult to prevent weight gain during pregnancy because you are growing a new human. The weight that you gain during pregnancy is centered on the abdominal region and it shifts your gravity center and causes an improper posture. This can press your back and cause pain.

Back pain can also be caused by uterine contraction and sometimes it leads to early labor – if the pain comes and goes. If this happens, you should visit a physician.

Many women deal with back pain during pregnancy. Here are a few methods that can help you relieve back pain, but before you implement these methods consult your healthcare provider.

Exercise:  Improving your overall fitness and strengthening your back muscles may help you carry the baby’s extra weight comfortably and easily and reduce the pain in your back too.

The best exercises for women who are pregnant are swimming, riding an exercise bike, and walking. Before you start any exercise, consult your doctor about what is the safest for your baby and for you.

Massage therapy: A massage can help you relax the muscles that are starting to get sore and also can help you reduce stress. With a good massage during the day you will feel no stress. If your muscles are relaxed and you feel no stress, you will also feel no pain in your back.

Hot and cold: Once your doctor approves, start putting a cold compress on the area of your back that is painful for 20 minutes every day for 2-3 days.

After 3 days, place a hot compress on the painful area of your back and alternate. Do not apply heat on your abdomen during pregnancy.

Improve your posture: During pregnancy, your spine is forced to carry extra weight because of the extra pressure on it by your face. In many cases, this can cause slouching and it presses your spine more. Place a towel in the small of your back while walking, and try to sit up straight. This will help you to improve your posture and reduce the pressure on your spine. The result at the end of the day is – less pain in your back.

See your doctor: If this does not help you and your back pain is still present, you should consult your doctor who will look at your health and your baby’s health too to see if something is wrong and then will know to prescribe a better therapy which may help you to reduce your back pain and keep your unborn baby safe.

Extra Tips for Relieving Back Pain

Change your lifestyle and prevent the causes of back pain before they appear:

  • If you want to pick up something from the ground, bend your legs in the position of the squat. Do not bend over!
  • Replace high heels with flats during pregnancy. High heels cause back pain.
