When it comes to over-the-counter medicine, Vicks VapoRub is like an institution, maybe because it works in a way different than other nonprescription treatments. Today’s medicine is all about effervescent tablets or pills, whereas Vicks VapoRub treats with vapors. The three main ingredients in Vicks- menthol, camphor, and Byrdie, relieve coughing and congestion when inhaled. Vicks can be also used as a topical analgesic for other problems.

Besides these uses of Vicks which are generally known, Vicks has many other useful purposes. Here are just a few of the home remedies for different issues that involve this strong-smelling ointment.

1. Headaches

Rubbing some Vicks to your temples will help you get rid of your standard headache in an instant. You can apply some Vicks under your nose and take deep and slow breaths if you suffer from a sinus headache.

2. Muscle Aches

If you have pains in your muscles, massage them with Vicks and wrap them in a dry and warm towel.

3. Eases Earaches

Besides being a common sign of an ear infection, an earache can also appear as a result of common colds. The pain can cause difficulties in daily activities, but especially in falling asleep. A simple remedy to ease your earache is applying some Vicks on a cotton swab and putting it into your ear. Leave the Vicks overnight, or until the ache has reduced.

4. Toenail Fungus

Rub Vicks on your affected toenail 2 to 3 times a day, for few weeks or even months.

5. Cracked Heels

Massage your heels and balls of your feet with this ointment before bedtime, and sleep with socks on. The following morning, wash your feet with warm water and use a pumice stone to exfoliate them.

6. Repels Bugs

To keep bugs away from you, apply some Vicks on your skin and clothes. You can also rub some Vicks on bitten spots to relieve the itchiness.

7. Keeps Cats at Bay

To prevent your cat from scratching the door, couch, curtains, or furniture, rub some Vicks on the areas and your cat will stay away from them.

8. Heals Minor Cuts and Bruises

Mix some Vicks and salt and apply it to your bruises. This will accelerate your blood circulation, thus dissolving the bruise mark more quickly. You can also use Vicks to hasten the healing process of minor cuts. However, be careful not to apply the ointment to damaged skin and open wounds.
